Famine - The Black Horse

Rev 6:5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

The third horsemen arrives on a black horse, holding a pair of scales in his hand. It is said that the colour black could represent vegetation that has been burned which will bring lack of food to the human population. The third horsemen brings upon a great drought to the earth which eventually leads to scarce resources and a worldwide famine is the result. God tells the horsemen not to harm the supply of oil and wine. This could be because oil and wine are seen as luxourious items and even though food is scarce, the abudance of oil and wine will "allow men to indulge their sinful appetites to the fullest, even while suffering from shortages of neccessary food, demonstrate the justice of their coming condemnation" (Morris, pg. 116). This would prove to God that the sinners deserved to be condemed because of overindulgence and greed.

In Season 5, Episode 14, "My Bloody Valentine", the third horsemen, Famine, is introduced. He enters a town and causes all on its inhabitant to overindulge on what they crave most. Famine takes the form of an old man confined to a wheelchair that will consume the souls of his victims, gaining strength so that he can march across the land. He arrives in town with a motorcade of black SUVs, which refers to the black horse he is to ride.
